How good are the long gorgeous surf days under the dancing sun!? It’s what we live for! But we all know that these long days exposed to the elements can come at a cost to our precious skin if we don’t look after it! So we got in touch with our favourite ocean skincare brand, The Sol & Sea, to pick their brains on all things skincare! Zoe, co-founder of The Sol & Sea shares her tips and tricks when it comes to long days out in the ocean and how she keeps her skin glowing!

What inspired you & your husband to start Sol and Sea?
On holiday in Tahiti and not being allowed to swim in the ocean with standard supermarket sunscreen on. We were totally oblivious to what we were putting into the ocean and on our bodies. The chemical filters in most sunscreen pollute and bleach our coral reefs and have already been banned in many countries such as Hawaii, Philippines, Palau etc. It's only a matter of time until the rest of the world follows suit and bans these chemicals from our oceans (watch out for octocrylene, Oxybenzone is mainstream brands).
My husband, Glen grew up in the Pacific Islands and has seen the deterioration in just a couple of decades. Along with NZ having the world's highest rates of skin cancer, 1 in 5 Kiwis get some form of skin cancer which is really alarming, as NZ has the most damaging UV rays because of our clean air and the depleted ozone layer, we wanted to help prevent this crazy health crisis. It also brings our passion for water sports and care of the environment together in a product.

Why is skin care for us surfer girls so important?
Prevention is the best protection for our skin, and the best anti-aging treatment you can do is sunscreen! It is a known fact that the ozone above New Zealand is dangerously depleted and therefore we have less UVA/UVB protection (which ages and damages our skin). Its reflected in our Melanoma cases in New Zealand and would be lessened if we were more proactive using sunscreen and sun protection.
Sunscreen and sun protection is a fantastic way to protect our precious skin and should be used everyday even on cloudy days and in winter. The suns reflection off the water amplifies this too!

How can we protect our skin from this damage/ what is your skin care routine?
Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen. When I was younger I wish I had listened to my mum about not burning my skin, and protecting and nourishing my skin. Now I have to live with the damage that I have done and its really hard to reverse and can be seen under UV light.

Every morning I use our Hydrating Face Serum and then followed by my favorite product, the SPF 30 natural mineral based Sunscreen. I love the consistency of the SPF 30 Sunscreen as it is thicker than the SPF50 Sunscreen and leaves my skin glowing. Then a touch of BB cream and Mascara and I'm out the door. I also use the SPF50 invisible zinc Facestick and the SPF50 sunscreen for any body parts that are exposed when I'm out in the water with the kids , and throughout the day for touch ups.

Our kids love it too! At night after a big day i use the After Elements Moisturizer and Antioxidant Facial Oil which feels amazing and sooths and hydrates my skin.
